Beginning in 2014, Hospice Without Borders implemented a unique bereavement program addressing grief and loss in Rwanda known as LALR. This program combines community building, bereavement education, wisdom circle practices, income generation skills, and self-discovery in a two week retreat setting. LALR is theoretically underpinned by the work of Worden, Stroebe & Schutt, Jenny Hunt and other pioneers in bereavement care. It utilizes a culturally appropriate, hands-on, and pragmatic approach to providing bereavement support to impoverished bereft family members, who having lost a loved one to terminal illness, now find themselves contending with complicated grief, and needing to build their lives anew. Since its beginning, LALR has now helped over 140 people realize that there is Life after Loss.
